The advancement of technology and the important role that it plays in our society has meant that computer literacy, which is the ability to use a computer and new technology efficiently and effectively, is a vital skill needed by everyone, regardless of age or level of education. The first-year students at the Hub are no exception.
Since it is generally acknowledged that the foundation phase is a vital part of a child’s schooling, the Abagold Development Trust decided at the end of last year to award bursaries to four students who, assisted by OLH, are studying to become foundation phase teachers.
Nick Brown is a tutor at the Overstrand Learning Hub - sometimes in person and sometimes virtually through Zoom, as he splits his time between England and South Africa. He is well qualified to tutor Academic Literacy to our first-year students as his career in education has spanned forty years, with sojourns to various countries in Africa.
The dropout rate among first year students stands at approximately 40% at South African institutes of higher education, such as universities and FET colleges. This indicates that there is more of a chasm than a gap between what is expected of students at school and at a tertiary institution. It is for this reason that OLH has an orientation programme for first-year students that introduces them to the skills that they will require to succeed in their studies.
The Overstrand Learning Hub hosted an interactive workshop to understand why some children find it more difficult to master mathematics, reading, and writing.
