Ansie Kitching (PhD in Psychology; M Ed Psych; B Ed Psych Hons; HED; BA) works with the OLH students in recognition of the challenges they face in being distance learners in a context designed for full-time students, whereas the reality for the overwhelming majority of our students is that they have to hold down a job and manage a family in addition to their studies.
Ansie explains her connection with OLH presents excellent opportunities for people to pursue their passion of becoming a teacher, while working in their own community.
The opportunity to be involved in spaces where human capital is developed always draws my attention. I therefore did not hesitate when I was invited to become involved with OLH on a voluntary basis.
I am registered at the HPCSA (Health Professions Council SA) as an Educational Psychologist and am currently Associate-Professor in Educational Psychology at the University of the Western Cape. My work in the academic context is informed by the principles and values of Community Psychology and therefore focuses on the advancement of mental health and wellbeing in educational environments.
As part of my community-engaged work, I offer my voluntary services to the Overstrand Learning Hub. As part of this community engagement portfolio, I conduct termly sessions with all the students.
During these sessions I introduce various strategies to enable students to stay motivated, sustain hope and apply coping and study skills efficiently.
I am also available for study-related consultations with individual students who need support with planning or who have to deal with challenges that may restrain their studies.
These conversations are followed up with referrals when needed to ensure that the student receive further professional interventions in the community.
My involvement also encompasses conversations about students’ future plans and the various factors that impact on their longer-term goals.
I also am interested in engagement with the various schools in the Overberg District to start discussions about ways in which the Hub can support schools.
Moreover, I envision the development of a community of practice for part-time Honours, Masters and PhD students in Education who reside in the Overstrand and are interested in being part of the transformation of education in the Overberg.
