FUNDRAISING

As tutors, we have been working hard at raising awareness within the community of the role played by OLH in the lives of our students.

POP-UP FUNDRAISING LUNCH 30 August

Students Crezelda Willemse, Thandiswa Booi and Alichea Jacobs and Executive Director Dr Nici Rousseau addressed the 83 people who attended the lunch held at the Hermanus Sports Club.

The students outlined the challenges associated with managing a job, family and studies, but the sense of achievement and hope that keeps them moving forward.

Nici then explained the challenges of studying a fulltime course part time and how the OLH system is designed to support the students.

It was a joyous day and even more so after Willem totted up everything and announced that an amount of R12 615 had been donated from those who were at the lunch and those who supported OLH from a distance.

OLH would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported us, and to Elaine of The Clubhouse at Hermanus Sports Club who donated the fabulous venue free of charge, and to Rebecca from The Eatery who provided a delicious vegetable curry and Pastei de Nata dessert for an unbelievable R50.

BRIDGE DRIVE 17 November

The United Church Hall buzzed with excitement as Hermanus bridge players gathered for an afternoon of informal bridge and a mouthwatering tea which rivalled that of any five star establishment.

The bridge drive was a huge success - although no Grand Slams were made, a number of players were rewarded for calling and making Small Slams; a 1 No Trump called and made; compensation was given to the unfortunate players who had a yarborough; and there were generous lucky-draw prizes for those who were not so lucky at the bridge table.

After tea, Dr Nici Rousseau briefly explained how the support provided by the OLH tutor system sets our students apart from most other distance learners, as they have the benefit of face-to-face assistance with the academic and social challenges that they face.

OLH would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all the players who supported us to the tune of R12 600! We couldn’t have done it without the United Church providing the venue for the bridge drive, the businesses that sponsored the wonderful prizes, the Hermanus Duplicate Bridge Club that provided the bridge paraphernalia, and the hands-on help of the volunteers who laid on the spectacular tea.
