Big Bridge Bash 2025: An Afternoon of Friendly Competition and Community Spirit

The third annual Big Bridge Bash brought together 74 enthusiastic players for an enjoyable afternoon of duplicate bridge, hosted as a fundraiser for OLH and organised by Dr Monika von Oppell with the assistance of Bob Cameron. The event continues to grow in popularity, drawing both seasoned players and newcomers, most of whom hailed from Hermanus.

Designed to be inclusive rather than intimidating, the competition offered a gentle introduction to tournament-style bridge for those used to more casual games. Players were split into two groups – one of nine tables and another of nine and a half – with a computer-based scoring system used to keep things moving efficiently and fairly.

Although competitive, the atmosphere remained light-hearted and supportive, reflecting the event’s focus on community and shared passion for the game. It was a space where friendships were formed, skills were tested, and laughs were shared.

A Word from OLH

During the afternoon, OLH Executive Director Dr Nicoline Rousseau took a moment to share a brief explanation of OLH’s mission and the important education opportunities it offers. She encouraged everyone to help spread the word about OLH’s work, and expressed her gratitude to all involved – especially Monika and her team – for their dedication and support.

Dr Rousseau was accompanied by four students, who not only assisted with pouring tea, coffee, and wine, but also served the refreshments and helped with cleaning up afterward. Their presence added warmth and elegance to the event, and they were warmly received by all in attendance. The student volunteers were:

  • Patience Sambalopa (BEd 4)
  • Nosipho Fetyu (Higher Certificate – Pre-School)
  • Zaylene Cox (BEd 3)
  • Tracy-Lee August (Higher Certificate – Pre-School)

They were gracious hosts, helping to create a welcoming atmosphere while also enjoying the generous spread provided.

Winners and Prizes

The overall winners – and winners of Section A as well as the floating trophy – were Elsabe Ketteringham and Lulu Kemp, who played an excellent game throughout.
Rita Raubenheimer and Joline du Toit walked away as the Section B winners, while John and Mari Smalburger secured the third prize.

There were also several lucky draws and a fun ‘lucky chair’ prize to add to the excitement.

Generous prizes were donated by members of the Sandbaai Bridge groups and local businesses. Contributions included bottles of wine, champagne, chocolates, and more. Rossi’s donated a R500 meal voucher, The Hair Lounge gave two luxurious hair treatment vouchers, Chantal’s Nails offered pampering manicure and pedicure sessions, Biga Café donated a coffee and cake treat, and Bella Bee Cosmetics gave a premium day cream. Wine from Stettyn also added to the mix.

A highlight of the afternoon was the raffle prize – a full three-course meal valued at over R600. The lucky winner, Peta McAdam, took home the delicious selection.

After the final hands were played and the scores tallied, players gathered to enjoy a spread of cheese and wine, teas and coffees, all lovingly prepared by members of the Sandbaai Bridge groups. The post-match refreshments were a fitting end to a delightful afternoon that celebrated not just bridge, but generosity and community spirit.
